Atherton Godfrey were well represented at the Annual Clinical Negligence Conference run by the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers.
John McQuater, who is head of Litigation, is currently president of the Association and opened the conference. John observed, when welcoming delegates, that although the NHS had seen an increase in claims the reason for this might be the announcement by the National Patients Safety Agency of the highest reported rate of safety incidents since records began. John stressed that the focus should be on avoiding such incidents rather than simply complaining about claims that resulted.
The theme of the conference this year was gynaecology and obstetrics. Christopher Noble, Head of Clinical Negligence, commented, “attendance at specialist conferences is important to help ensure understanding of medical issues, particularly in the complex cases we are dealing with involving injuries suffered to children at or around the time of birth”.
