Backdated marriage certificates for converting civil partners

The move comes after a backlash from some 40,000 couples who signed a petition against the rules which included no official ceremony and no ceremonies outside registry offices.
The Government Equalities Officer has confirmed that couples in England and Wales will be able to convert their civil partnership into a marriage from 10 December 2014. Couples who choose to convert their status will now be entitled to a backdated marriage certificate as opposed to a certificate of conversion as had been previously suggested.
There is still work to be done, but the government is optimistic that everything will be in place for the 10 December deadline.
The backdated certificate will be almost identical to a marriage certificate issued without a conversion but there need to be some differences. The date the original civil partnership was registered will be shown as the ‘when married’ date. To make sure that the marriage is properly recognised, the certificate will also have to show the conversion date as the ‘when married’ date will be before it became legal for same sex couples to marry in England and Wales.
