Celebrating 40 years in business

Atherton Godfrey celebrates its 40th anniversary this year.

When the firm first opened its doors on Thursday 12 April 1979, John Atherton and Charles Godfrey, aided by their two secretaries, initially advised and acted for clients in relation to family and matrimonial, conveyancing, wills and probate, civil litigation and criminal matters. They could not have envisaged then the journey they were about to embark on.

After only 12 months, the thriving practice began an expansion that was set to continue for 35 years and more.

Today the firm employs around 120 legal and support staff, including specialists in many areas and provides most of the legal advice that an individual or small business could need.

Atherton Godfrey is featured alongside international city firms in The Times Best 200 Law Firms 2019 guide, with commendations for personal injury and clinical negligence.

Many of the firm’s solicitors are highly accredited specialists in their particular field, including family law, children law, commercial law, medical negligence and personal injury.

The firm belongs to several specialist panels covering complex subjects such as brain and spinal injury and is one of few firms locally to be able to offer legal aid for those having to deal with the trauma of birth injuries.

The firm has also gained national recognition for the high standard of its training, having been nominated for Training and Recruitment awards almost every year since 2004. A further accolade was received when the firm won the Excellence in People Development award 2018, organised by Doncaster Business Chamber.

Don Bird, senior partner, comments: “I have witnessed many changes over the years and feel privileged to have seen the firm grow into the outstanding practice that it is today. I am immensely proud to be part of the firm’s growth.

We owe a great deal to the firm’s founding partners, John Atherton and Charles Godfrey, who had a clear vision for the direction of the firm when they decided to go in to business 40 years ago.
Since then, Atherton Godfrey has evolved on the basis of specialist knowledge, the ability to build strong relationships and the willingness to adapt and find tailored solutions to shifts in the market.

The legal sector is part of an ever changing landscape, so I am particularly pleased that we have been able to retain the personal touch of a high street practice while providing services matching those of city firms.”
