Dragon Boat Challenge 2014

The event was first organised by The Rotary Club of Doncaster St George's and Doncaster Tourism in 2010 and has gone on to raise over £30,000 for charity.

Teams battled it out in 30ft long brightly painted boats over three heats on a 200 metre course on Doncaster's Lakeside.

The Atherton Godfrey Team, made up of staff from our clinical negligence, personal injury, marketing, IT and accounts departments, competed against teams from company's including BT, ASDA, One Call and Amazon. The team from Denton and Nickels won the challenge, closely followed by the teams from Ardagh and Danum Round Table.

Besides competing for the coveted title, all teams were out to raise as much money as possible for charity. This year's nominated charity was the Eve Merton Dreams Trust.

Set up in memory of Eve Merton, the charity is a fitting dedication to a local lady who had been a prominent figure in the community for many years, working on Doncaster market, tirelessly raising money for charities and setting up community groups, including children's football clubs.

Eve was diagnosed with cancer in 2009 but went on to beat it. The joy was to be short lived as within months, the cancer had taken hold again and this time it would prove to be terminal. After a long, hard battle, Eve died on 17 January 2011, surrounded by the family she adored. All throughout her illness, and even in her final, tragic days, her thoughts were for others, not herself.

The charity now sets out with the sole aim of helping to grant the wishes, or fulfil the dreams of seriously ill or terminally ill local cancer patients.
