But with around 60 million Britons travelling the world each year, holiday accidents and illnesses are becoming more common.
Almost 4,000 Britons come home injured or ill each year – the holiday they saved for all year is ruined, and they are left to carry the cost.
Unfortunately, claiming compensation can be more difficult because it usually has to be made in the country where the injury took place. In many of the European countries the cost of living is much lower than in the UK and this could mean much smaller compensation payments.
However, if you take out a package holiday, including the flight and accommodation, then you can claim under English law where there is a proper assessment of the costs an injured person would incur for such as living expenses, loss of income, rehabilitation, adaptations, medical treatment etc.
Common holiday accidents include:
Slips and trips due to wet or defective flooring
Contracting food poisoning from the hotel
Swimming pool accidents due to broken glass or defective steps/slides
Injuries sustained while on an organised excursion
Illness caused by poor hotel hygiene – legionnaires for example
Falls due to poorly paintained hotel paths or grounds
If you are involved in an accident while abroad:
Get someone to take photos of what caused the accident
Make a note of what happened or sketch the scene
Get the names and addresses of witnesses
List all injuires that have been sustained
Keep receipts for any medical treatment
Our expert lawyers have helped clients to recover compensation for holiday accidents / illnesses around the world, for example:
£50,000 for a client who contracted legionnaires whilst in Cuba
