Increase in divorce

According to the annual bulletin, the number of divorces was 118,140, an increase of 0.5% on 2011.
The figures show that there was a decline in the number of divorces between 2003 and 2009, followed by a 4.9% increase in 2010.  The further rise in 2012 may be a sign of renewed confidence following the recession, when people were concerned about property prices and job security and felt less able to afford to separate.
Divorces in 2012 were highest among people aged 40 to 44 and the average length of marriages ending in divorce was 11.5 years.
