Justice week 2018 – why we need to act now

Justice week is a new initiative aimed at increasing public awareness of the sweeping changes decimating the legal landscape.

The event, set up by the Law Society, the Bar Council and the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives, will run from today, Monday 29 October to Friday 2 November and involves a week long programme of events that demonstrate why justice and the law are so fundamental to our society and to the communities that we live in.

Don Bird, senior partner at Atherton Godfrey, said: “This is an opportunity for the legal sector to increase public understanding of just how fragile our justice system is and the role that the government continues to play in its demise.

Many parts of the justice system are now at breaking point, we need to recognise the importance of what we have and take action before it’s too late.”

One of the events being staged is ‘Justice in Focus’, an exhibition at the Law Society’s head office in London that will show the importance of access to justice in a pictorial format. It highlights some of the ways that lawyers can help solve the everyday problems any one of us could become victim to at any time, for example:

  • Being unfairly dismissed from work
  • Fighting eviction or repossession
  • Ensuring access to children after a divorce
  • Challenging local authority decisions or policies

None of us know when we will need the help of a lawyer; we just expect the legal safety net to be there if ever we need it.
