We’re very pleased to announce that Support Dogs is our chosen charity for 2019.
Support Dogs was established in 1992 and is a Sheffield based registered charity that provides services completely free of charge to those that need them.
Zip, the golden Labrador who is the ambassador for the Support Dogs came to visit us recently, along with his handler, Laura.
These amazing dogs are trained to help disabled people in a range of ways, including stripping the bed and even helping with the washing. Some are trained to give vital support to autistic children and keep them safe from harm, while others are trained to warn their owners about the imminent onset of a seizure. The dogs can warn up to 50 minutes in advance and are 100% accurate. This alert gives the owner time to get to somewhere safe until the seizure passes.
Unsurprisingly, it costs £20,000 to train each dog, and a further £2,000 each year of their working life. Because of this, we’ve decided to dedicate a proportion of our fundraising this year to help them raise the vital cash needed.
Rebecca Wharton, chair of the firm’s charity committee, commented: “Everyone was totally in awe of just what these dogs can do. They give people the independence they need to be able to live normal lives.”
Follow us on Facebook to see how we get on with the fundraising – don’t miss our Name the Mascot competition, where there’s a signed Doncaster Rovers shirt up for grabs!
